Put the Car in the Garage? Are You Kidding? I love to walk for exercise through different neighborhoods. On these walks I see so many garages that are stuffed from floor to ceiling and wall-to-wall. If you are finding it difficult to store the most important item in your garage (your car), it is time for a garage overhaul. Clear out the garage as a starting point. Pick a day for your garage overhaul that is sunny and move as much as possible out in the driveway temporarily. This helps you create room to see what you have and will free up empty space to store the things you are going to keep. Toss old stuff. Items in garages are typically storage spots for seasonal items. Even so, if you have not used something in a year, consider tossing it or giving away to charity. You may find that your lifestyle has changed and camping is just not your hobby anymore. If that is the case, there is no need to hang on to the tent, canopy, cooking stove, and the six storage bins of camping equipment. Check the rules. Check your local town’s hazardous waste disposal rules so you can properly dispose of old paint cans, batteries and other toxic items. Keep like items together. Designate an area to store like items. For example tools should be stored together in one area and garden supplies in another. Be conscientious about returning the items to their proper place. Label, label, label. Label shelves and cabinets to make it easier to return items to their designated area. Label the hardware drawers with the name & size of nails, screws, bolts and other small hardware to help find what you need quickly. Look up. Take advantage of ceiling storage space by mounting a ceiling system. You will add a large area of storage space for ladders, screens, lawn chairs, pool equipment, etc. Hang a grid system. Grids are wonderful for keeping garage items organized and off the floor. The grid mounts directly into the wall and allows you to choose from numerous components, such as hooks, baskets, shelves and drawers, to fit your storage needs. Create a recycle center. Designate an area for your recycle bins. We have three recycling bins for cans, glass and paper/plastics. Our bins are located on shelves stacked on top of each other and pull out for easy access. Have a car wash bucket. Store sponges, soap and other car washing apparatus in a bucket and store it in the garage. Hook the long tools. Hang long tools such as rakes, brooms, and shovels from a hook organizer found at hardware/home improvement stores. Hook the bikes, too. Hang bikes on wall hooks or bike racks to keep the garage floor clutter free. |
