Prioritize and Get It Done! All the organizing experts, all the organizing books, all the life coaches, etc., will tell you to make a to-do list in order to get things done. I agree! But, in order to really get things done and achieve your goals, you must do the important tasks on your to-do list first. Have you ever spent the day being busy and you know you were busy, but felt like you accomplished little? Or, maybe you have crossed tons of things off your to-do list, but they were the easy tasks and not the ones that will help you achieve your goals. While getting the small, day-to-day stuff done is important, it is even more important to schedule time to do the hard stuff…the tasks that will bring you closer to your goals. Here is a system for getting the most out of your day and getting the important things done. 1. Make a Master List. This is simply a long running list of everything you want to accomplish. It may contain large tasks such as, write a book, and it may contain small tasks, such as clean out the refrigerator. It is in no particular order. The purpose of the Master List is to have one place as a reference so you don’t forget any activity or task and so you’re not trying to remember everything that needs to get done. 2. Look over the items on your list and assign each activity an A, B or C. A – Those activities that are important and urgent and will impact you greatly if you don’t accomplish them right away. B – Activities that are important, but not urgent. You have time to do them before they have a great impact on your life. C – Activities that may be nice to do sometime. Remember that the letter you assign to each task is not written in stone. You may find that a task you assigned a B priority may turn into an A priority or a C priority in the future. 3. Focus. Pick from your Master List to make out your daily to-do list. Some time experts suggest picking six, three A priorities, two B priorities and one C priority. Others suggest picking three A priorities for the day. Another method is to ask yourself, what is the single most important thing that I must accomplish today? Promise yourself that you will absolutely accomplish this task on that day – no excuses. Choose the method that works best for you and do it every single day. If you follow this system, you will get an enormous amount of important things done and you’ll easily be able to reach your goals. |
