Kitchen Storage

Most kitchens have enough storage space.  The problem is too much stuff.

When was the last time you checked the dates on your spices and weeded out the ones that are over a year old?

How many plastic bags do you really need?  How many plastic food storage containers?  Keep only 4 or 5 plastic bags and recycle the rest.  You are going to get more next grocery shopping trip.  Sort plastic containers by size and shape.  Send the overflow and any you don’t have lids for to recycling.  Lids can be contained by placing them in a gallon size plastic zip bag.

How many small appliances do you have?  How many do you use?  Do you actually use the blender or food processor more than once a year, or are they too much trouble to use and clean?  How about that turkey fryer, electric smoker or electric knife?  Streamline your kitchen by donating appliances you don’t use.  The only appliance that you would need more than one of is a crockpot and then only if you do cooking ahead for the freezer.

Ask the same questions about kitchen gadgets.  Do you really need three cheese graters?  Do you need a cheese slicer or can one of your good knives serve the same purpose?  Keep only the gadgets you use on a regular basis.  Store them in a drawer divider to keep them contained, visible and to help you put them back where they belong after use.

How many sets of dishes, bowls, silverware, place mats and glasses are you trying to store?  One set of dishes, one set of silverware and one cabinet full of glasses is plenty.  Keep the sets you love and donate the rest.

Beware overstocking by warehouse shopping.  Make sure you will use and have ample storage space before you buy 300 tea bags.  Is the 25 pound sack of sugar going to fit in your cabinet?  Designate one or two cabinets for food storage.  Using one or two cabinets strictly for food storage is more efficient than scattering food storage around the room.
