How to Declutter Your Clothes

A lady emailed this week to ask me the best way to declutter her clothes.  Here was my reply:

As far as decluttering your clothes, take everything out of the closet.  Start four piles.

Pile #1.  Everything that is the wrong size, not your color, is too big or too small - put in this pile.

Pile #2.  Things that fit but need hemming, fixing, etc.  - put into this pile.

Pile #3.  Things you absolutely love and feel good when you wear - put into this pile.

Pile #4.  Things that are stained, stretched, etc - put into this pile.

Now…what to do with the piles you have sorted.

Pile #1 goes to charity to bless others that the clothes do fit.

Pile #2 - decide whether it is worth fixing or not.  If so, keep, mend and then add to Pile #3.  If not, add to Pile #4.

Pile #4 goes straight to the garbage.

ONLY Pile #3 goes back into your closet.

A common “but” I get when implementing this method with clients is “…but I might be able to wear Size 6 again some day!”  Great for you if you do, but today you wear size 12.  If and when you get back to Size 6, then those clothes will be out of date.  Besides you will want to go shopping and buy new things because you are proud of yourself for losing weight!

This gives you a clear picture of what you love, really wear and what you now need to make a wardrobe.
