How to Always be Tidy It is a lot faster (and easier) to shift a moving object than a stationary one. Let me explain this. On cool days my husband wears a jacket to work. When he comes home from work, he continues moving through the front door straight to the hall closet and hangs up his jacket. He does this before he hugs me hello. From the front door he could walk into the kitchen and toss down his jacket or he could walk into the living room and toss his jacket on the loveseat (nearest to the door), but he doesn’t. He continues moving and hangs it up right away. Now, if he did toss it down in another room, then he (or I) would have to pick it up, carry it down the hall and hang it up. It would take more time. I know you probably thinking, “Beryl has gone overboard with this example,” but I want you to see how it takes less effort to be tidy than to clean up after yourself or someone else. Try it for yourself. The next time, when you: Complete a task at work – put away tools and paperwork Return from a trip – unpack everything immediately and put away the suitcase Get out of bed – make the bed Undress – hang things up and put the dirty laundry in the laundry basket Eat something – clean up after yourself Arrive home with used sports gear – clean and store it ready for next time Finish a task in the garage, workshop, craft room or garden – dean up and put away your tools Come in from running errands – Put away the groceries Go to the mailbox – sort the mail What is clutter? Just something out of place. Every piece of paper or equipment lying around in a symptom of a decision not made or an action not completed. People that struggle with clutter stop too soon…the job is not complete until it’s all put away. |
