Getting Rid of Computer Clutter

Just as your space or desk can have clutter, so can your computer.  A bit of regular maintenance will keep your computer decluttered and working optimally.

1.  Purge old files.  Check for obsolete files, old pictures, old jokes and video and get rid fo any you no longer use or need.

2.  Perform disk cleanup.  Here are the step-by-step instructions for cleaning up your disk files:

  • Close any open programs
  • Click Start
  • Click All Programs
  • Click Accessories
  • Click System Tools
  • Click Disk Cleanup
  • Select the drive you want to clean up (usually “C” drive)
  • Wait a few seconds while computer calculates, then a screen will appear called Disk Cleanup
  • Check the following boxes:

Temporary internet files

Offline webpages

Recycle bin

Temporary files

WebClient/Publisher temporary files

Compress old files

  • Click OK and then Yes
  • Once the computer is finished with Disk Cleanup, the tool will close automatically

3.  Perform disk defragmention

  • Click Start
  • Click All Programs
  • Click Accessories
  • Click System Tools
  • Click Dish Defragmenter
  • Choose the drive to analyze and defrag (usually “C” drive) and then click Analyze
  • A message will pop up telling you whether or not disk defragment is necessary.  If defragmenting is recommended, then click on Defragment.
  • When the defragment task is finished, click Close.

4.  Backup

          Perform the backup of your choice.  A good website with information about backup is www.ayscr.com.
