Getting Organized for a New Baby

While you are busy counting the days until B-day (baby day) and wondering if you will ever be able to sleep on your stomach again, you can also be getting your nursery and baby supplies ready.

Getting organized for a baby can be overwhelming.  Denise Annas, teacher certified for Grades K-12 with a Bachelors Degree in Education, home school teacher and a mother of three, states, “There is a lot of stuff out there for babies/nurseries and 90% is completely unnecessary.”

Mrs. Annas suggests the following items for the nursery:

A crib

Dresser

2 sets of sheets

Crib pad

Rocking chair

Chunky board books

Cloth books

Changing area

Stroller

A CD player

Baby swing

Consider a crib that can convert into a toddler bed as your child grows.

Mrs. Annas suggests purchasing a dresser for the baby’s clothes and a changing pad that attaches to the dresser in lieu of purchasing both a dresser and changing table.  She keeps current clothes in the dresser along with a drawer for essentials – diapers, wipes, thermometer, diaper rash cream, etc.

When buying a stroller, take into consideration its uses.  Will you be using it for travel, small aisles in the supermarket, going for walks?  Does it have a cup holder for you and storage for the diaper bag?  Evaluate its height and comfort, how complicated it folds for storage and whether it will fit into your vehicle storage area.

Mrs. Annas uses a CD player in the nursery to play soft instrumentals or classical music during down time and lively songs during active time.

Organize the baby’s clothes by size.  The future clothes can be stored in plastic containers on a shelf in the nursery closet.  Label the containers according to size.

Pack a bag.  Keep a diaper bag packed and stored in the baby’s closet.  When you have to go out, you’ll be able to grab the bag, add some food and/or formula, and get going quickly.
