Organized vs. Disorganized Unexpected visitors arrive Disorganized: You throw something on, glance nervously out to see who it is, reluctantly invite them in, apologizing, feeling embarrassed, make excuses for the mess. You wonder how you will ever get through it all, you have no idea how you will fit these tasks into your schedule, you berate yourself for not getting things on the list done. Organized: You feel excited at the prospect of completing the tasks easily and by a set time. You happily add more things as your think of them. You frequently cross off completed tasks and feel satisfaction at having done so. Goals and Ambitions Disorganized: You feel depressed, a failure, disappointed, confused and overwhelmed. Organized: You feel excited, confident, sure of yourself. Short Notice Lunch Invitation Disorganized: You don’t know if you can possibly make it. You have nothing clean to wear. You don’t have time to get ready. You don’t have enough money. The car is empty and stopping to get gas will make you late. Organized: Grab your purse or keys and head out the door! Emergency trip to the hospital Disorganized: Better throw on some clothes! Where’s your shoes? Where are the keys? You are in a panic whether to rummage through piles of papers for drug allergies or just wing it when you get to the hospital. Organized: You grab your household journal with emergency information in it and head out the door. Need to find a document quickly Disorganized: You look through the piles of paper in the kitchen, in the living room, in the stack of files you meant to file away. Organized: You go straight to it in 30 seconds or less. Someone asks “What’s for dinner?” Disorganized: You have no idea. You start making up excuses. You resent the question. You need to go to the grocery store before you can answer the question. Organized: You announce tonight’s menu or everyone already knows it. Your child asks if they can invite a friend to stay for dinner Disorganized: You resent the question. You make excuses. You fuss and worry about what to prepare. Organized: Sure, no problem. A client drops by your office Disorganized: You clear magazines and papers off a chair and start making apologies for the mess of your desk and your office. You make excuses. Organized: You invite the client into your office, place the project file on top of your desk in your current projects file and give your client your undivided attention. |
