Criteria for Determining an Item’s Worth Whether cleaning out a drawer, a closet or the garage, there are some hard questions to ask yourself to determine whether or not you should keep an item. When was the last time you used it? If you haven’t touched it, seen it or worn it in the past 12 months, chances are you are not going to in the next 12. If you absolutely feel like you need to hang on to it for some reason, then find somewhere to store the item. Don’t take up valuable space in your active storage areas with items you don’t use. Will I Ever Need This Again? If you can picture a specific, concrete instance when you will need it in the near future, then keep it. (Hint: “I might need it someday” is not a specific, concrete instance.) Here are questions to ask yourself to help you come up with a specific, concrete instance: Why would I need it? Where would I need it? What would I need it for? Who would ask me for it? When would I need it? Is it easily replaceable? What is the worst thing that would happen if I got rid of it? If you have asked yourself all these questions and still can’t come up with a good, specific answer, then get rid of the item and move on. |
