Business Professionals Look for Ways to Be More Productive

A recent survey, conducted by Office Depot states that 48 percent of business professionals report that they will attempt to increase their efficiency for the remainder of this year.  32.2 percent of those surveyed plan to give up personal interests in order to achieve their business goals.

A trend toward longer hours and diminished personal time is nothing new, but it reminds me of productive tools and procedures to be effective with work, but still have some balance in your life.

Productive Tools for Busy Professionals

How about a light-weight laptop computer with Wi-Fi capabilities to increase productivity during travel?

A mobile phone that also has scheduling, contacts and list/tasks capability is helpful.  I recently switched to a Blackberry because I found I needed to have my Outlook contact information with me and needed to be able to schedule appointments on the spot.  I didn’t want to carry a PDA and a phone so looked for one unit that serves all my needs.  It is working out great!

A portable USB Flash Drive may be useful to conveniently carry documents instead of having to carry heavy documents and files on the road.

Productive Tips for Busy Professionals

Longtime professional organizer, Stephanie Winston, states, “the busier we get, the greater our need to be efficient.”  Here are some strategies to keep productive, organized and focused:

Stop wasting downtime.  How much of your time is spent waiting?  Think of all the places you spend waiting…before business appointments, at doctors’ offices, in bank or grocery lines or at home waiting on another family member who is not ready.  Identify things you can do in five or ten minutes to do while waiting.  Here are a few to get you started:

  • Make an appointment
  • Read an article
  • Write a short note

Realize that no one has unlimited time.  Life is a series of choices.  Learn the difference between what you need to do and what you would like to do.

Put an end to telephone tag.  Leave a specific message or ask for a specific response, instead of just asking a person to call you back.  If you are not able to take a call when your call is returned, then the person can provide information on your voice mail.

When in doubt, throw it out.  If you tend to push paper to the side rather than dispose of it, ask yourself, What is the worse thing that could happen if this paper didn’t exist?  If the answer is less than traumatic, get rid of it.

Spend money on people and products that save time.  The right specialists and the right products can enhance your productivity and free you to met your deadlines and goals.
