An Ugly Seven Letter Word…Clutter
The Encarta Dictionary defines clutter as an untidy
collection of objects; a condition of disorderliness or overcrowding; or to make
a place untidy or overfilled with objects.
It’s clutter if –
-
It has no useful purpose.
-
It was missing, you wouldn’t notice.
-
It is the wrong style, not flattering or the wrong
color.
-
It doesn’t fit – physically, mentally or
emotionally.
-
It is too good to use or not good enough to use.
-
Using it is more trouble than help.
-
It is damaged.
-
Someone gave it to you, but you don’t like it or
will never use it.
-
You are afraid to use it because it might break.
I also define piles of clutter as visible signs of deferred
decisions. Some examples:
-
You have
stacks of mail that is really junk, but you haven’t yet made the
decision to toss or shred.
-
You are
holding on to unfinished work projects that need a decision to be
finished or scrapped.
-
You have
unfinished craft projects that will no longer fit the person it is
intended for or you don’t enjoy that hobby anymore.
-
You don’t
like an item and don’t want it anymore, but someone gave it to you so
you feel guilty actually throwing it away.
